In the case of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, the main story-line remains. We all know how that story goes. Throw in Hossan’s brand of ‘cockness’ to the Alfian Sa’at script and you will find yourself before The Queen (Sebastian Tan) of the Eternal Kingdom: He She who does not pardon imperfection. By that, I mean sending all his her lowly subjects for Enhancement once they turn eighteen. Yes, by 'enhancement', I do refer to plastic surgery.

This version of Snow White shows the technologically advanced Queen first attempting to disfigure Snow White (Elena Wang) by buying over the doctor in-charge of her Enhancement. Of course, the apple was the one that did the magic. It is Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs after all.

The Queen’s favourite events include a yearly beauty pageant where he she crowns herself Queen, year after year. We can always depend on his her trusty Magic Mirror (Celine Rosa Tan) on never telling a lie and in turn serving as a reality check for the “best preserved 85-year-old” Queen.

In order to preserve his her forever hold on his her reign over the Eternal Kingdom, he she goes from being The Queen to Sovereign Majesty to Majestic Majesty and finally The Queen, again.
What is a local musical without the usual dose of political humour? Subtlety is key. This musical hit it right on the nail.

One thing that I really appreciate from this musical is the increased interaction with the audience. Take this scene for example, Prince Charming (Dwayne Tan) asked “Where’s Snow White?” When the audience pointed to the left of the stage, he replied, “Well, maybe I’m not supposed to find her yet!”, effectively sending laughter through the audience.

The cast was a delight to watch. Sebastian Tan did a splendid job as the over dramatic Queen. He was a class act with his diva songbird moments, the many bigger than life wigs as well as the perfect portrayal of Queen of the Eternal Kingdom. Elena Wang who debuted in Singapore earlier this year as the lead of Beauty World, took to that stage like a veteran. Her vocals were crisp, clear and she never missed a note. She commanded that stage and I thought I saw an inkling of Selena Tan in her performance. Attagirl.

What can I say? The usual suspects of Singapore theatre will never let you down. On the contrary, they will leave you in high spirits. JS
